Alleged wrong way drunken driver held on $100,000 bail

The
Norwood financial expert accused of killing a man while driving the
wrong
way on the Mass Pike early yesterday morning had a blood-alcohol
level nearly
three times the legal limit at the time of crash,
prosecutors said today.
Philip Daniels, 33, was held on $100,000 bail at his Boston Municipal Court
arraignment this morning.
Prosecutors said he registered a 0.23 on a
Breathalyzer test. The legal limit is 0.08.
Daniels is charged with motor
vehicle homicide while under the
influence of alcohol, operating under the
influence of alcohol causing
serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a
motor vehicle, and
wrong way operation of a motor vehicle.
State police said
Rene Bronfield, 49, of Worcester, was driving a
1978 MG when his vehicle was
struck by a 1995 Jeep Cherokee driven by
Daniels at about 1:49 a.m.
Bronfield
was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with bserious injuries,b
troopers said.
Bronfieldbs passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene,
has yet
to be identified pending family notifications, state police said.
Daniels is accused of driving west in the eastbound lanes of the
Mass Pike and
crashing into the 1978 MG Midget near the Prudential
Tunnel. He was not
injured.
