Another thought concerning the wide open throttle incident...

Turning the key off might not be the best and first action to take... unless
you have a vintage race car with no steering lock and no power booster. On
my vehicles with power brakes and steering lock, I would first put the car
in neutral (conscious I might wreck the engine), so I could easily steer and
brake the vehicle to a safe location.
