No, this is not a scam. It is common practice in the United States to pay a fee to a seller to cancel their advertisement.

It is also common practice to accept payment in forms other than cash and release your item for sale to the "buyer".

These rules and practices didn't apply before the advent of the internet, but now anyone with a computer or access to the World Wide Web can be trusted.

I even show my Social Security Number on my MySpace page.
