I just searched on this topic and found this very detailed instruction:

Also, I used one of those $19 vinyl repair kits that comes with colored 
paste, textured paper and an electric cooking iron.  I had a 1" square 
H-shaped tear that was very old, curly, and rough on the edges.  The repair 
is amazingly good.  It would be perfect if the textured paper had exactly 
matched my vinyl texture.  Of course, I have not yet sat on it, so I don't 
know how durable it will be.
