There are several distributions that let you run a Live-CD. Put the CD into
your PC, start the PC, and the PC will boot into Linux. You can play around
with it before you decide it's the way to go. It includes (free) OpenOffice,
which lets you open/create MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint compatible documents.

I've been running Ubuntu's version for a few years now. It keeps getting better
with every release (which can't be said of Windows).
