Exactomunderino, Jim...

..............from what I've googled
thus far. but the P-38's as I recall were turbocharged....and they had problems with those blowers 'til they got an oiling
problem worked out as I recall??

The later 1260 HP (single-stage blower?) Allison was almost as powerful as the the US Packard-built Merlin and used in later
P-40's, "our" Merlins later evidently going specifically to the Mustangs considering their mission requirements escorting bombers into/over Germany flying in the
mid-20 altitudes where that second stage
blower in the Merlin really counted.

My understanding is that the biggest problem with the Allison power plants
in the Mustang was the lack of a two stage supercharger. The P-38 versions
with the V-1710 Allison had two stage superchargers giving the P-38 a
service ceiling of over FL400 if I recall. This power plant also appeared in
a few of the last P-40s made.

Cheers!!
