Yep, this sounds like a classic example of either cam timing or ignition
timing being out of whack.

Quadruple check the spark plug wiring order.
Make sure that when #1 cylinder is at TDC, firing, that the "rotor" is
ointed at #1 on the distributor cap.  ...
