[Spridgets] wire wheel rear end conversion

Because all my 948's were race engines I only used 1275 cam cores for
regrinding to have the benefit of the extra lobe width. My memory is a bit
fuzzy but I seem to remember the oil pump had an extra lobe on the rotor vs.
the earliest pumps, so I would expect the oil volume was increased. There were
some subtle modifications needed. I had to drill & tap two 1/4-28 holes to use
four bolt pumps, and I would grind the end of the pump shaft for clearance as
the 1275 assembly is longer overall. I had to use the smallest flat washers on
the extra bolt holes or it would foul the pump cover, and I remember doing
some clearancing on the cover with a small ball pein hammer. I would also port
the block openings to match, but I can't say if it was necessary or just my
desire to radius all edges. After installing the cam bearings I would work
with just the block, cam and pump to insure that it turns freely when
assembled. Also make sure the drive dog is inserted into
the cam in the correct direction or it will bind up.
I hope this helps your decision.

Now for a motor question. I was told that a cam for a 1275 and the oil pump
for a 1275 will also work in a 948 and is a more roust setup versus the stock
948 pump and cam. Any truth to it? Especially in reguards to the oil pump
(although you do have to do a little clerncing on the pump housing so it will
fit the oil pump cover on the backplate)? Is it that the 1275 pump is a
higher volume pump? Also, will the cast steel rockers and pedastals from
1275 fit the 948 head?
