G'day Skip

In theory, yes, you can use an electric pump (usually mounted low and near the
tank) and pump the fuel right through the mechanical one. However, you need
to determine why the mechanical pump died. If it's because of a split
diaphragm, then some of the fuel you pump through it will end up in the sump
(aka: oil pan). The first sympton will be low oil pressure as the fuel
dilutes the oil. The next sympton will be the explosion.

The best place to put the Facet is in the box, preferably left at the shop
where you were going to buy it. Unless of course you're stone deaf. They're
noisy buggers. If you really must buy one, ensure it's a low pressure version
as the high pressure one will cause the carbies to flood. It can push the
fuel right past the needles and seats in the float bowls.

Yes, there's a proprietary blanking plate - 1098cc engine and some 1275cc
engine had them fitted. Part number 2A265.

Why don't you just fix your mechanical pump? Then it would last another 50
years.

Two theories on the best place for the filter.
1) Between the tank and the fuel pump, to keep crud out of the pump.
2) In the engine bay where you can see it.

The glass filters are a good idea in as much as you can clean them. However,
they do hinder the fuel flow more than the disposable ones. One of my mates
cars (1160cc + Shorrock) had a fuel starvation problem on long hills. We
checked the fuel flow rate, and it took 50 seconds to pump a litre of fuel.
Then we took out the glass filter, and it took only 40 second to pump a litre.
With the disposable filter, it took about 45 seconds. It doesn't sound like
much, but that translates into a 20% drop in flow for the glass filter and 11%
for the disposable filter. Your average fuel consumption is, of course, far
less than 1= litres per minute. However at speed with full throttle, you can
empty the float bowl faster than the pump can fill it up.
