She wants to keep the motor original?
If not then a motor and trans swap would be easier than trying to mate
an auto trans to an old motor.

I've helped my friends do a couple of Cummins 4BT swaps.  That is a
cool little four cylinder motor, but a little heavy for a sports car
transplant.
Give me an old Cadillac convertible sled, though, and I'll drop a 4BT in it.
