They can.
My son is putting a VW sidewinder coupled to a Geo Tracker 5 speed in 
his Morris Minor.
At least he has the engine and trans and knows about the adapter kit.
Then this Miata drivetrain came along, so he is now not sure which way 
he is going with this.
