Do you have gas?
Do you have spark? At the right time?
Had a car jump time once, that could cause lack of running.
Weak starter getting released at the first sign of ignition?  BTDT.
 When "something catches and stops the spin" does it happen suddenly or does
the starter just spin freely without turning the engine over?
