Back in the late '50's, early '60's you could race your 50cc in its own class at places like Crystal Palace and Brands Hatch.
Bikes were made by Gilera, MV, Honda, the Rumi Formichino ( a 50cc twin!), etc..

My favorite was the Itom. spinning at around 11-12,000 rpm!!
