I'm learning, or suspecting all sorts of things. I have an 88 LX with a 4 speed. It sounds like either the transmission or the hatch door has been replaced!

my 5-spd '88 LX model was 42 MPG (all highway @ 75+ MPH).  The higher
you revved that little 4-banger the more efficient it seemed to run!
