Not so!
The "waste" is the byproduct of producing Nuclear weapon grade Plutonium.
1 Ton of uranium produces 1 Pound of Plutonium and a whole lot of nasty stuff.

I live and worked 1/2 hours drive south of 570 square miles of contaminated land, dotted with underground tanks containing 53 million U.S. gallons of high-level radioactive waste  waste.

The latest plan is to Vitrify the waste.
