[Spridgets] Bearing spacer, front hubs

I am replacing the bearings in the front hubs of my 73 and I was wondering
why the spacer is needed.

 

There are ridges that capture the bearings and prevent them from moving
inward.  Is the spacer really necessary?

 

Just wondering.
