Did you center the jets on the carbs before beginning?

Thanks Bill and everyone
else who offered suggestions. I didn't get a
chance to work on the car again
until this weekend and I had to fit that
in around my son's hockey games, so
I'm a little late getting back to
every one on this.

The car is running a
little better now but I still have a problem with
it. I got the carbs
balanced and it appears the mixture is either very
close or right judging
from the color of the spark plug tips. I replaced
all the the rubber gas
line, gas filter and clamps, there are no leaks.

When driving the car it
pulls strong in first and second gear through
5500 rpm but when I shift into
third it starts to sputter around 2500 -
3000 rpm. Pressing on the gas makes
it worse. It seems to clear up if I
let off the gas for a bit. Once I let off
the gas for 10 or so seconds I
can give it gas and it will run smoothly up to
5500. It does this
consistently.

This is a strange problem that I haven't
run into before. The
distributor is new and I have a Crane XR700 fireball
ignition. The fuel
pump is a new aftermarket fuel pump which I bought from
NAPA (Airtex
E8016S). NAPA has this listed as the correct replacement pump.
Advance
Auto lists the Airtex E8128 which pumps at 4 - 6 psi vs. 2.5 - 4.5
psi
for the one I have. Has anyone else run into this problem before?

Any
ideas on how to fix this will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Robert
