Starting fluid is not uncommon for use on Diesels, especially worn out Diesels.
You should know two things, though, before starting Diesels like that:
1.  How to effectively cut off the air.
2.  How to effectively cut off the fuel.

It ate whatever it sucked from the kids hand.  Whatever it was surely
went through the blower and into the chamber, probably out the
exhaust.
