Linda, I've mounted a roll bar in each of the three convertibles I've owned in my life. (the first one was a Spitfire) I've always said that I'd rather climb out from under a car cursing my dumb ass for losing it than get my head crushed or be trapped inside. As someone who does occassionally get on a track, and who sometimes loves to play on the edge of adhesion on deserted curvy roads, I know it is not unreasonable that I may need it one day. In my opinion, they also look way cool... :-)B 

Rick has a good point about bouncing your head off it, though. All of my cars have had high-backed buckets and the bars have also all been well clear of my admittedly fat head, so not an issue. I've also mounted 4-point belts in all three of my convertibles to hold me where i want me to be. (again, they are maybe overkill on a street car, but I like the way they look and feel)
