I had the same issue, I wound up using lots of Silicone spray, twisting and pushing, and finally a small screwdriver to get the last bit through. But I guess along the lines of this thread, that use of KY jelly might be appropriate?

 One more thought...   What kind
of religious ceremony is required to get the new rubber bumpers installed
in the front frame members?  I got the big one above the spring in pretty
easy but the small ones the shock arm hits are the offspring of the
devil....
