I?m planning to be there, probably with my MGA.  If not the MGA, possibly one of my ?72 Midgets.

 

I was talking with a couple of the guys in my local club (Western PA Triumph Assn???and no, I don?t own a Triumph) and I think this may be the last hurrah for our group, at Carlisle.  Only a few of us will be attending, this year and the rest of us will be at Summit Point.

The internet has really ruined Carlisle, I think.  That, plus the fact that we?re all getting a lot older and not nearly as many of us are actively restoring these cars, anymore (I still am, but I really don?t need to find any parts, anymore).  The vendor area keeps shrinking and, other than replacing ?consumables?, for my workshop, I haven?t bought anything significant there for some time, now.

 

I really hate the thought of giving up on Carlisle, but, I think this may be my last visit to Import Carlisle.

I can fondly recall preparing weeks before the Carlisle show looking forward to
Setting up a booth and then the hourly walk arounds partly to socialize,
partly to covertly rummage for more parts. Anticipating the weather wildcard.
Then gathering for lunch at the food concession area. Later to settle on a dinner place and enjoy staging our cars outside and answering curious onlookers questions.
Frank, Biff, Kevin, Chuck, Rick, Franky, Rob, Linda and several others I have
Probably forgot about. But all of us made it a great yearly event.
My last few trips saw less and less vendors, fewer hobbyists, and a constant
struggle to maintain our own Import Show identity.
The 7% sales tax slapped on didn't help either
I read Bud's post and can relate completely.
Just wanted to add my .02 worth about this coming weekend in Pennsylvania.

I must agree.

For me, it was the camaraderie and friendship more than the event itself.
 A meeting of friends and acquaintances, (usually in the rain & mud).
Searching for parts in the early days and trying to get rid of parts in
more recent years ;)    Lunch with friends and dinner at the "Steak
Place".

Frank bringing home cars that he didn't know exactly how he had acquired,
and didn't have a trailer for ;)   I was usually the closest so a quick
trip home to get the trailer and then to Tom's River with his latest
acquisition.  He did that a few years in a row.

He called it PennsylRAINia because every time he came here it rained, even
for some of the rallies we staged.

I'll miss Carlisle Import, but I miss the "Spridget crew" more.

Those of you who are going, have a GREAT time!  Stay dry!!

I wish I could be there.  I was a five yearly event for me.  I remember see
the small race-type alternator on Frank's green Bugeye in 98 and thinking
I've got to get something like that.  Nothing like that was available until
I helped Cambridge Motorsport develop one (moveable backing plate and
several test fits on my car to then get a productionised one made.  Then
there was the year Alan found me a 1275 Spridget flywheel in a bin - it
came back to the UK with me and I'm not sure where it is now.  From the
same bin came a cast iron thermostat housing - not sure why anyone that
doesn't have the air pump still uses the iron housing - it went on to fame
but not fortune being featured in at least 2 editions of a certain Spridget
book.  I still have it.

Saw a lot of straw at Carlisle but no animals eating it.

My budget was always tight and a seminar helped pay the bills.  I think it
was Alan who asked one year how many seminar went to which I replied 'who
cares they've paid me and that's the most important thing!'

Don't tell Frank, but I bought a Chinese aluminum crossflow radiator on ebay a couple of years ago for $145.95 shipped to my door.  Fit perfectly and worked properly.  The only thing I didn't like was that the fasteners were metric (ewww).   

All fans work better as pullers.

I'm running a Geo Metro radiator and a Hayden electric fan.  I can't get

I decided to sell the car a year after installing the radiator and listed it on Craigslist.  I guy from St. Louis, MO flew up here, counted out a pile of hundred dollar bills, and drove the car home - in January!  Last I heard the radiator was still working perfectly.  :-)

Daniel bringing big rear spridget brakes to America as carry on luggage....IT WAS ONE HELL OF A GOOD TIME!And a very prominent part OF All it was Frank.* dam it actually brings a year to my eyes*And who could forget "zap screws and liquid nails".Carlisle was a yearly pilgrimage to get Frank wet.? ?Muddy shoes, meets under the bleachers and more!Funny how it seems like an eternity ago...Yes Carlisle has changed over and over.? ?But!? I must agree.
For me, it was the camaraderie and friendship more than the event itself.? ?A meeting of friends and acquaintances, (usually in the rain & mud).? Searching for parts in the early days and trying to get rid of parts in more recent years ;)? ? Lunch with friends and dinner at the "Steak Place".??
Frank bringing home cars that he didn't know exactly how he had acquired, and didn't have a trailer for ;)? ?I was usually the closest so a quick trip home to get the trailer and then to Tom's River with his latest acquisition.? He did that a few years in a row.??
He called it PennsylRAINia because every time he came here it rained, even for some of the rallies we staged.
I'll miss Carlisle Import, but I miss the "Spridget crew" more.? ?
Those of you who are going, have a GREAT time!? Stay dry!!

I wish I could be there.? I was a five yearly event for me.? I remember see the small race-type alternator on Frank's green Bugeye in 98 and thinking I've got to get something like that.? Nothing like that was available until I helped Cambridge Motorsport develop one (moveable backing plate and several test fits on my car to then get a productionised one made.? Then there was the year Alan found me a 1275 Spridget flywheel in a bin - it came back to the UK with me and I'm not sure where it is now.? From the same bin came a cast iron thermostat housing - not sure why anyone that doesn't have the air pump still uses the iron housing - it went on to fame but not fortune being featured in at least 2 editions of a certain Spridget book.? I still have it.
Saw a lot of straw at Carlisle but no animals eating it.
My budget was always tight and a seminar helped pay the bills.? I think it was Alan who asked one year how many seminar went to which I replied 'who cares they've paid me and that's the most important thing!'

Didn?t see many Spridgets there, this year.  But I think the event seemed to be showing signs of a revival.  The car show end of it has gotten to be HUGE.  While the parts vendor numbers are still pretty small, there seemed to be more vendors, this year than last.

So, instead of this probably being my last year of attending, I?m pretty sure I?ll be back next year.

 

Besides, the drive out there and back, from Pittsburgh, is half the fun.

Route 30 isn?t too bad, if you get off before it gets to some of the bigger towns.  We use (in no particular order) routes 136, 88, 31, 30, 75 and 641.  Next year, I plan to avoid 30 and 31 as much as possible, due to too much traffic on Sunday.  But, they sure do beat droning along on the PA Turnpike.

We enjoyed torturing the crowds of people on the show field by driving the '60 Saab race car over to the Saab tent and back to the race car pavilion.??Could not find a thing in the swap meet.Saw some good spridget parts , but nothing I needed.??Saw possibly 5 or 6 spridgets on the field from our vantage point with the race cars.I did bring one thing home....a sunburned forehead and neck.The show field was impressively full.ChuckSent from my LG Mobile

It appears after some server updates people are receiving emails from lists
they are not subscribed to. Until Mark gets the chance to sort this out if
you don't want to be on these lists you will more than likely have to
manually unsubscribe from the lists yourself.

As many as you know, for the past two years I've been trying to organize a low-key Spridget gathering/driving event somewhere in the mid-Atlantic region. Only one serious and one kinda interested party so far on this years attempt.

Perhaps we can organize something like this around Carlisle & Summit Point next year.

Anyone have an interest?

those emails ;-)
I guess most of those guys are on lists that are so dead that they haven't
seen an email from it in years.

The problem was every time a clown would try to opt out it would send an
email.
I wanted to send "If you stop replying to this then we will all stop
getting the emails"

Jim's Midget isn't quite ready for prime time yet. We ran into a few snags
with missing parts (windscreen bolts and shims, dizzy cap, etc), wrong
parts (wiring harness, specifically), and modifications (struts for boot
lid and bonnet). The midget is now on its wheels, has the engine and trans
installed, the doors are assembled (not on) brake lines and fuel lines are
all run and ready. The interior is not.
Thanks to Kevin Valentine for reworking the old wiring harness, Bob
Kitterer for rewiring the dash and spending hours working the 'eyebrow' for
the rear main kit to the right thickness, Jack Orkin for his many insights
and keeping us all moving forward, Dave Woerpel for busting his knuckles on
the doors and Greg Gowins for doing the heavy lifting.
Jim will need another OSHIT to finish up and get things finalized, but it
should be just the fiddly stuff of you know, starting the engine, tuning,
installing the doors and interior and checking the electricals.
Given another day absent the tornados, we might have had it going, but its
well down the road now. Who's up for Mid-July to finish this thing up?
BTW, also thanks to Jim and Caroline for feeding and lubricating all of us.

Jim's Wild West Oshit is the furthest distance I have traveled by car for
an Oshit to date.   3250 miles total traveled distance ;)

We made great progress on the assembly of Jim's car.  The car will command
a bit more attention for completion.  Jim will be acquiring a few more
parts and soon we'll have one more Oshit meeting in Dodge City.  Dates to
be announced ;)

Stuff completed: brakes & hard brake lines installed, engine rear main seal
installed on engine, engine & tranny installed in car, fuel pump installed,
doors assembled, dash wiring harness renewed, re-wrapped & installed, main
harness rewrapped & installed, new rear harness installed, new fuel line
installed, fluids checked and filled, and a few more things I'm forgetting.

Things that need to be finished: install "quick drain" on oil pan, fill
engine with oil, bleed brakes and clutch, install doors and windscreen,
install interior, tidy up wiring under the dash and install the front clip.

This was another great experience for me and I am looking forward to the
return trip to Dodge City to complete the car.

Jim and Carolyn are GREAT hosts who made us feel welcome in Dodge City.

There?s a woman in Mexico selling cores I think. My machinist bought one recently and was happy. I can get infobof needed. Our ?modern? gearbox is now 40 years old. Unbelievable.

I actually saw a Datsun 210 parked on the street here in Mexico the other
day. Didn't stop to see if it was a 4 speed or 5 speed though.

The Datsun 5 speed transmission that is in my Bugeye was rebuilt by Paul A. back when he was selling his adapter kit (also in my car).? There was a problem with the aftermarket synchros that Paul used.? The trans grinds going into 3rd.? All other gears also if you try to shift too fast.? I have to let the RPMs drop to idle to shift without grinding.? When I told Paul about this, he sent me the best set of used synchros he had.? I have yet to pull the trans to put them in.? What I would like is a quality set of new synchros to install.?  I was with Paul when we did a test on a guys (then recent) install.
 The grinding was pronounced and obvious. Paul rebuilt the tranny and
 it still did it. That's when he mic-ed all the syncros. The new ones
 he was then being supplied with were all out of spec. After that he
 ordered a bunch and mic-ed every one, throwing away the bad ones. I
 saw the pile. If he sent you some, they ARE good. What you would now
 buy would almost certainly be worse than what he sent, as they are
 being made out of spec.

This must have been before he was measuring the new ones you are talking about.? The only reason I have not installed them is I thought there would be some decent ones being made by now.? From what you say, I would be better off with the used ones Paul sent me. Now to find a transmission shop to do the work on a 40 year old transmission. Thanks.Mike MacLean

I have a disassembled 1275 with a Rivergate adapter kit and a low mileage Datsun five speed.  They have been stored in the shop for 19 years.

Reasonable offers considered.

If it were me I would send the flywheel to Gerard to be modified for the Datsun clutch and throwout bearing ( Paul A?s system).  I have new old stock seals for both ends of the Datsun trany which may be all it needs except flushing.

Also I have a Judson supercharger fro a 948.  I used this on my car in 1960 and 1961. For some reason there are two oilers but no crank pulley.  These have been stored in my shop since 1962.

Reasonable offers considered.

Your machinist was lucky. I've had at least 5 people that bought kits from me buy the gearbox from the source you recommend and all 5 were very dissatisfied with what they received. One guy even bought a "rebuilt" one, which after seeing photos he sent me, clearly was not; not even the seals had been replaced with new ones..  He ended up having to pull it from the car and paying a second time to rebuild it. He asked for a refund from the seller, but they refunded only a fraction of the difference he paid. The seller uses several, changing IDs to avoid visible negative feedback. Others had different issues, but none could be used "as-is".  In my experience (through others) These are not even inspected. The seller paints them with silver paint to make them look "fresh", which is always a red flag for me.

Several years ago, some new parts were available, currently, almost no replacement parts are available any longer. I have a source for bearing kits and synchros, and a few other consumables. Anyone considering purchase from the Mexico source (usually listed as being sold out of US border cites in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, etc., should be aware that you will likely need the gearbox rebuilt or possibly may only be good for parts. Thanks for your detailed information. I thought it was suspicious the vast majority of Datsun 210 5-speeds on EBay were sold from a Texas address (but originated from Mexico) and always a shiny silver.

I do not autocross or race, although I did have the car on track at VIR and Put-In-Bay this past summer for some fun laps.?I purchased these wheels used about 15 years ago, and I have no way of knowing their history.?I discovered the hairline crack while I was cleaning the inside of the wheels at a time when they were off the car for other reasons. The crack is located in one of the four main spokes, close to the hub. It is visible on both the inside and outside of the spoke.
