Not a course of action he or I chose to follow. A course I went on run by what was ICI (now AstraZeneca) had a metal model petrol tanker with a hole around 1inch square cut out of the side. It had a splash of petrol poured in, swirled round and then drained out. A lit taper was placed in the hole, the toy blew off the table onto the floor. This was repeated around five times with sufficient explosive force to blow the tanker onto the floor (without a fuel refil!). It 'popped' a further twice. Never ignore the ability of petrol fumes to seep into old metal and blow. I have also heard of using gravel or small nuts & bolts swirled round in a tank part filled with water but that means getting the old tank out of the car and hiring a gorilla to do the swirling. Whilst out, you clean it up, (the tank, not the gorilla) realize the the bottom is paper thin so you coat it with fibre glass resin and make an awful mess. The reality is that it is the top of the tank that rusts through because of internal condensation over the years. But you now have doubts firmly implanted in your mind that the tank will fail at any time in the near future and ensure you look under the back of the car every time you go near and find the spots of oil from the pumpkin and then those from the rear of the gearbox. For those reasons above this wasn't mentioned in my first post but you thought it was just a hiccup in the fuel tank.. If you are going to get a NEW tank with no drain hole why not take it to your local machine shop and have a large brass nut and bolt braised in at the low point. Don't forget it needs doing before use! If you are cutting a drainer from your old tank just remember the toy tanker and that your grinder produces an awful lot of sparks.... Needless to say, the pump cannot draw gas up through the tube. Any hope of repairing it? I can't figure out how to reach the filter. Another 2 cups of rust flakes poured out. After soldering, the gas tanks have been leak-free for 9 years. It's nice to see all the familiar names and get a collective set of ideas. I didn't go the BBQ route. Instead, I bought nifty pliers with two pivot points to extend the reach. These are a great addition to my tools - Crescent 2x pliers. With these 12 inch pliers, I was able to grab and remove the filter in the tank. A cleaning with solvent was all I needed to get the tank looking nice on the inside. I also replaced the sending unit with a brass float. The plastic float was full of gas. No wonder the tank always reads empty. Now I have a clean tank, two in-line filters (one before the pump and one before the carbs) and a reliable Facet pump. Just went out for the first drive of 2021. As a backstory, I drove my '69 blue Sprite to Sprite 50 (2008 Lake of the Ozarks, MO) and Spridget 50 (2011-Elkhart Lake). Those events inspired me to find a Bugeye Sprite. Glad to say it is finally running! Bruce '59 Bugeye in St. Louis -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'll be posting my restoration to this thread. Recap: Linda G realized her Bugeye was one project too many. I jumped on it, left NH at 5:30AM, drove to NJ to seal the deal and pick it up, arrived home the same day around 9:00 PM, tired but happy. Memorial weekend traffic after a year of Covid-19 restriction and rain slowed me down. The car fits on the U-Haul car hauler, inner tire sidewalls pressing against the inner edges of the open bed's rails. My Warn Pullzall eased getting it up and onto the trailer. The car seems to be very original, from the paint to the vinyl covering the dash trim. There are large rust holes in the floor, smaller rust holes in the bonnet, A-pillars, and rear fenders. Hopefully my welding skill are up to the task. To lead me on my journey, I need a plan. I searched the archives and found "Secrets to a Timely Restoration", an old post by Frank C; he lives on. http://www.team.net/html/spridgets/2004-10/msg00653.html Not enough detail for me, so I put together a plan. See attached. It is a first pass, with as much detail as I can envision. I'm sure I missed a few things, but I wanted a plan to keep focused and to mark my progress. More to follow as I evaluate what I have and start to dismantle the car. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I didn't have a 1.25" open end wrench for the crank nut, and a socket won't clear the frame member, but I did have some 1/8" bar stock that I welded into a wrench good enough to turn the crank. I did about 1/2 a revolution and it stopped. Hmmm. The plugs were out, what's stopping it? A frozen valve? I took of the valve cover to watch the vavle action. A little more oomph on the wrench and it got by the stickiness. 2nd revolution it stopped again, but less oomph was required to get by the stoppage. After that, it turned pretty easily. OK, now it's free. Next step was to do a compression check. I took out the old battery, dropped in a new, charged Optima Red (too early in the process to get it, but if I keep it on a battery tender, it should do OK until I need it), and hooked up the battery cables. Moment of truth: put in the key, turned it, pulled out the starter pull and - nada. The pull didn't pull enough to activate the solenoid. No worries, I just pulled on the other end of the cable at the solenoid. Rr. Rrr. Doesn't seem to be enough juice getting to the starter to spin the engine. Arrrgh! While it is opening, the mixture is richer due to the higher engine vacuum. This is what compensates for the lack of a Holley-type accelerator pump. The heavier your car and the less torque your engine has, the heavier the oil you should run to cover flat spots in acceleration. Actually the quote is "Top up damper assembly reservoirs with oil the Ref. A." Reference A gives the brands from Duckman's to Sternol to Shell, and 3 temperature ranges for each, Tropical down to 41F, Extreme Cold, 41F to 10F and Arctic, below 10F. As an example, Tropical ESSO, 40/50 or 40 or 20W/40 Extreme Cold ESSO 20W/30 or 20 Arctic ESSO 5W/20 In each case this is as stated "ENGINE, Drain off the old oil and refill with fresh oil to Ref. A." So,,, Whatever you are putting in the crankcase is the right stuff for the damper. There may be reasons and preferences for doing something other. I run a Weber DGV and am unconcerned any longer, but thought I should share to keep some from over thinking it. YMMV -- Best regards, Bill mailto:Zormecteon at comcast.net Warning! I filled the dashpots with 15 wt motorcycle fork oil, and half filled an oil can with the 15 wt. Acceleration was sluggish, so I added some 20 wt to the can, refilled the dashpots, and went for another test drive. If the engine seemed to be running rich on acceleration, I added 15 weight. if it seemed lean, I added 20 wt., changed out the oil, and went for another test drive. Not sure what the actual viscosity is, but it works well. Will have to recalibrate the oil after I change out the carb bushings and shafts. You can expect this to be a very crowded weekend and we will be limited to our traditional Spridget Paddock space.? I am responsible for the Spridget Paddock working with Kathy Newton.? We are not able to expand our space and there will be some racers paddocking on the outside of the track.? We will squeeze in as many as we can.? Tow cars and crew cars will not be allowed in the Spridget area.? Only trailers and race cars.? Our guests and sponsors will have first priority.? ?I appreciate everyone's consideration with this unique crowded weekend.? More details as we progress. Clancy Schmidt is promoting his adjustable A-Arm parts with a free entry to the next SMRS race weekend.? See below: Stan,?I was not ready to do the drawing for a winner who gets their entry paid at Grattan when we gathered for lunch at the Wilson?s while were at Blackhawk.?My bad.?I have agreed that we will draw a name at each race event of the drivers there.?? IF they have a Clancy?s Adjustable A arms sticker on each side of their car near the front wheel arch they are legible to win the free entry to the next race.?The virtual winner for the free entry for Grattan (as drawn fair and square by my Granddaughter Marin) is David Long.??Would you pass the word.....?Clancy -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Only a couple bucks at the auto parts or on line, but better than having that long neck get broken or through the joint out of balance.
