Before SMRS we would be excited if we had 5 Spridgets racing for the weekend.? This year we had up to 17 at several events.? In the beginning there was a lot of time spent promoting through magazine article and internet social media.? In my opinion we have grown to a self-sustaining point that is comfortable requiring less promotion.? Jeff Kelly (Don?s Father) had many remember his calmness and passion for Family and Sprites.? Ron Soave reread the eulogy he presented at Jeff?s memorial.? Our end of season awards were cool navy blue wool look baseball caps with tan bills including SMRS logo on front and SMRS overall finishing positon in the rear for the top 3 in each class.? We had enough brats and food, but I realize that we have less people contributing.? This lunch only works if we have everyone contributing.? It only takes going to a grocery store and picking up beans, cole slaw or potato salad at your deli and precooked brats. We race with a guy who can?t use his left leg from chemo treatment. He designed and made a pneumatic clutch that is hand operated. I?m imagining a similar thing with a telescoping tube, small electric air pump and a bleed-off to lift the bonnet but that?s gonna take a lot of design work, fabrication and development to get the travel you?ll need. A front tilt with dampened stays would be easiest, sort of like power rear hatches that are on SUVs and minivans now. Call Tom Colby at Speedwell and tell him what you?re trying to do and see what he says. He sells the best fiberglass bonnets as well that knock off like 50 pounds if you wanted to really go nuts. The stock rear hinged bonnet is much harder to open compared to the front hinged race car. The issue with the front hinges is finding a set that fit well and work properly. My front hinges were made by a previous owner and while they work the bonnet doesn't fit very well. And then there is the issue of latching the bonnet when it's closed. Tom Colby at Speedwell Engineering makes a nice set of front hinges and a clever latch set up too. But like everything Tommy does they are quite pricey and the latch set costs 50% more than the hinges. I've bought several Bugeyes for less than what he wants for a set of hinges and latches. :-) Rick > On Aug 20, 2023, at 1:01 PM, Mark via Spridgets wrote: > > ? I have this weird problem. I am resisting the temptation to just use a multi part block and tackle with a loop around the chrome handle. My other thought is to tilt it forward with a kit form somewhere, I think there are several out there. I haven't ever used a forward tilt and not sure how much "lifting" is needed? I can get help when I really need it but would rather be able to do it my self on my schedule. Then you could check the oil at a gas station, too.
