I may love Bugeyes, but when it comes right down to it I don?t love restoration work. The reality is that I?m not going to finish this project, so it?s time to move it on. The car is a 1959 Sprite. Original RHD car, sold initially in Penryn, Cornwall. Imported to the USA by George Broomfield (Director of Manufacturing for Delorean) ? I bought the car from his grandson. The GOOD: * Bodywork was done by Schneider Auto in SLC, and is in fantastic shape. * Wheels and tires are new. * Car is complete (or at least was when I took it apart for bodywork) * Includes a factory hardtop in good shape * Has a 948 engine and ribcase transmission, also includes a 1275 for rebuilding * Includes a Datsun 5-speed and the necessary conversion pieces * Includes parts to convert to front disc brakes (but those pieces likely need to be rebuilt) * I have the title and Heritage Certificate in hand * Some chrome has been redone The BAD: * This is a car in boxes * Other than the bodywork and wheels, EVERYTHING else needs to be rebuilt including the engine * Things like brake/fuel lines and wiring will need to be totally done or bought in * Seats are rough, possibly rebuildable If you?re interested, give me a call at 801-450-7493 or email me at drooartz at gmail.com ?and we can chat. The clutch never seems to engage, and all I get is grinding when trying to get into gear. When I press the clutch pedal in, the pushrod at the slave doesn't start to move until the pedal is about halfway down. I took the slave cylinder off the transmission, and I can see the piston moving inside when I press the clutch. I attempted to see if there was an air pocket in the slave by pressing in the clutch, then trying to press the pushrod in to see if anything bubbled back up, but it was solid. I remounted the slave, and tried adjusting the pushrod, but if I make it too long, it doesn't move at all when the pedal is pushed in. When I shorten it, I get pushrod movement, and I can't move the fork anymore by hand when the clutch is depressed. I'm not sure what else at this point to check. It seems to me that the pushrod should be moving sooner in the pedal travel than it is. When Mark and Jack came out to help me last year, they discovered a few things that I had done wrong when I originally installed the conversion kit. We got those resolved, and re-measured, and things appeared to be in tolerance. Any hints or ideas of other things to check are greatly appreciated. Luckily, it ended up being a master cylinder issue, not anything related to a bent fork or things being out of tolerance. I must have had a stubborn air pocket, the master cylinder pushrod not moving until the pedal was halfway down should have been the clue. I've been fighting this gremlin off and on for months. It finally moved under its own power for the first time since 2000. Will have to do some more shakedowns, but getting it inspected and registered is closer than ever. I'm keeping the car original as I can.? The fitting on my present pipe is rounded off and I've had to resort to Vise-Grips to undo the nut.? I don't believe there is enough pipe to cut and install a new compression fitting. ? I'm swapping out a fuel pump that does not have a priming lever for a rebuilt pump with the lever.? Makes it so much nicer to start the car after it's been sitting for awhile. Blowing in the filler neck is a bit weird.
