You have indeed found the easy way to remove the springs.  Be very careful
when extending the arms back to release the springs however, if you go too far
it is easy to put a dent in the top of the rear fender fro onderneath with the
hook on the arm that attaches to the spring.

After I sent out the mail---I went out and looked at the truck again and
figured out an easy way.

If you keep the trunk hinge attached to the car end and remove it from trunk
lid side---you can easily rotate the hinge (farther than it eill go when both
ends are attached). This puts the spring on more slack and you can easily pull
the spring off the hook.
