Hate to bust your bubble, but you buddy is absolutely incorrect in that assertion. 
It all depends on how tires are stored and used. 
That brownish stuff, btw, that you scrub off your tires to keep them nice and black keeps uv from damaging them. 
If you like, I can have my friend who is a tire engineer for a major manufacturer re post what he said to the mg list a couple of years ago.

It was a good friend of mine who was the technical expert on the lawsuit the woman brought against the tire company (she lost).  He said EVERYONE should know that five years is the max life of a tire....
