[Tigers] Headlights (Non tiger)

I had to polish the plastic headlights in my 190K Subaru AGAIN a few
months back.  Right after that, I was futzing aroung in the garage and
came across my spray can of clearcoat.  Picture the little lightbulb
over my head.
 
I coated just a bit of the corner of one headlight lens with the
clearcoat, and now,  months later, it still looks pretty good, while the
rest of the lens is headed downhill again.
 
Has anybody tried this full scale basis?  Did it work?
