If I recall, you have to buy one designated for different cars. Then you have to press out the tube in the bottom for the rear. On the front, if I recall, it may have worked ok. But its total extension was a tad too short. So when you jack up the car, the suspension is held up by the shock. And I guess there is a chance for it to hit the extension if you bounce over something too much. But regardless, I finally sprung for the Konis. There is a difference. I'm glad I did. Unless a club or other organization wants to commit -? with deposits, to? more than half of the run, this is not happening. Used to be we received lots of queries and had deposits for a fair number before we ordered, even with that, it took nearly 5 years to sell 25 cars worth. He was directed to a Koni service center. They wanted $250 just to service EACH shock, $980 in parts and $400 to paint the shocks (apparently not included in the rebuild price). That came to $2,380 less tax and shipping. Ironically the shocks could be purchased new for $623 for the set of four. So, if you are considering buying Koni's because they are rebuildable you might want to reconsider that. Here is a link to the noted discussion thread: http://corvaircenter.com/phorum/read.php?1,1168960,page=1 Personally I looked into purchasing the parts to rebuild the Koni front set I have and I could not find ANY source for parts. They seemed to be available for the motorcycle line but not the automotive line. When I consider the above experiences and the reply from Rick I get the impression Koni is only interested in the exclusive customer that has no problem in paying the exclusive price. They appear to be single adjustable so rebound and compression change together. I got Spax shocks for my car back in the 60?s. Replaced a set of Koni shocks. Didn?t like the damping characteristics quite as well, but the ability to adjust on the car was revolutionary. Soften up, drive to an autocross or cross country, get to the event, turn them up and compete, post event set down for the street and drive home. Many competition cars weren?t trailered in those years. A great ability to accommodate street comfort and autocross performance. Or to adjust to your individual preferences. My set are still on the car, which exited regular competition in the late 90?s, but my two SCCA autocross national championships in 1974 and 1975 were with the Spax shocks. Would be worth exploring if you need shocks. They also might custom make a set of double adjustable shocks if you were interested. My car started to bottom out and I finally figured out that I had two blown shocks and my leaf springs were sagging. I got the springs re-arched and started looking for shocks. I have a car show coming up this weekend, so time was a factor. I looked at Koni and Spax but the lead times were way too long. So I decided to go with KYB. Looking through the different forums I saw different part numbers and I finally settled on part number KG5562 for the rears and KG4616 for the fronts. The rear shocks were a perfect fit. On the front shocks I needed to press out the steel bushing spacer on the old shocks and insert them into the KYBs. Super easy and they also fit really well. The whole car now sits a little higher and the handling is a million times better. Thanks for everybody's input. They mostly deal with heavy trucks but they can handle any leaf spring. I told them I needed to lift the back of the car about 1.5" and they basically separated the leaves and put them in a big press. My old springs are liable to start sagging again in a few years because of the old metal. I asked the guy at Ace about re-tempering the springs and they don't do that anymore. He said that back in the days before they had the more modern giant presses they used to have a forge and they would heat up the metal and then beat it into shape with sledge hammers. The only source I've found for new leaf springs are some of the suppliers in the UK. Tom Hall doesn't supply them anymore. I would like to know if anybody knows of a US supplier. Everyone should carefully examine their transmission for traces of original color and note any markings. The B19KC engine group could have black for the spring 1965 assembly time or blue for the Oct. 1965 assembly time. I?m not sure the early Borg Warner transmission were painted. The Tiger Parts List does not list the shocks or at least my copy does not. Alpine Parts List 6600992 Series IV section MA 5220811 Shock Absorber S/D by 5221220 5221220 Shock Absorber I found 1 of my original front shocks - this is listed on the barrel. 1223 8 71 this looks like a Rootes part number but I can't confirm that ARMSTRONG Armstrong Patents Co Ltd York England Patent No 6 Subsequent Rights Type GT/7 71109/ Date 3/65 Some of the print is worn so could be a miss read or omission here. Here are some dimensions Shock max travel length - 4.16" Tube diameter = 1.88" Anyone have an original rear shock to share similar info? My Tiger had a Delco replacement with a 1968 date code. I believe it is always wise to understand the original parts so we can make better choices with replacement parts. I hear really good things about them, from their very low weight, to their longevity and their effectiveness at putting out fires without wrecking everything after. Would be worth investigating, I will be when mine current extinguisher goes out of date.
