Good Afternoon Tigers,
 
I had took my Tiger out yesterday for gas and an inspection sticker. Two miles from my house the car just died - dead as a doornail!  Brand new battery.  I had to have the car flat-bedded home (I waited 2.5 hours in 90+ degree heat for the truck to arrive). 
 
It's definitely an electrical issue, but I have no idea where to look/start.
Any input would be appreciated!

Tim,
I would start with looking at the battery cables.  I had a similar problem
(but in the fall, temps in the 50s) and the ground cable from the battery
was bad/corroded.  Get a multimeter, set it on "continuity" and check  for
ground continuity,  then check for voltage from the positive terminal to
ground.

Check your ammeter. The same thing happened to me. The main power goes through the ammeter. A wire came loose on the back of the alternator and shorted. The ammeter acted like a fusible link and fried. All power was lost. I ended up rerouting the wires to the ammeter through a 30-amp circuit breaker.

Coil would be something to check, it will run when it's cold and fail when
it warms up.

If the car just died it's hard to put the blame on the battery.  If you
managed to start the car, the battery can't be in very bad shape.  If you
were to completely disconnect the battery while the car is running, it
would continue to run on the generator.  If you're sure it's an
electrical problem I would start by checking out the ignition system -
points, coil, condenser, ballast resistor.

If the horn, headlights, etc. work, then it might be a bad coil, or loose wire. Check and see if you have spark.

If it sputters and then dies, it's most likely fuel related. If it dies with no notice, most likely electrical.? Once that is determined it makes it easier to find the problem.
?Once at a TA event a woman brought in a car that would die and then restart. One of the Tiger owner there discovered the wire from the coil was not plugged tightly into the distributor. Problem solved in 10 seconds with a test drive to verify.? ?Would check all wires that you can reach to be sure they are tight and clean.

I agree withe a ground issue somewhere.

Do you have electronic ignition (Petronix, Mallory etc?) if so, I would strongly suspect that. Have heard similar stories from owners that have electronic ignition.

Modern batteries can do that.  Did it in my 1994 Ford Probe way back then.
No warning signs.  Was parked 50 miles from home,
went to start it an "dead as a doornail".  After a jump, was able to drive
it home on the alternator though.

I sure wonder what Tym means by "dead as a doornail".  I doubt it is what
all the other guys are suggesting...

Victory!
Found my problem!  It was the ground (main) on the right hand side (upper) in the trunk.
The ground probably hasn't been removed/cleaned since the car was built.
I took it apart, sandpapered and filed everything and Bingo!

It?s hard to find 11inch so I buy a set of 22inch
for the same price and cut them in half, giving 
me a free spare set.

I leave a set on the car and prop them up when I?m not driving so they don?t eventually fold over.  I?m also in California where it doesn?t rain.

I was lucky to find several sets of NOS housings and blades new in their boxes on ebay years ago, along with many NOS refill blades.

Windscreen Wiper Arm Replacements

The wiper arms that come stock on the TIGER are a joke. They should be relegated to the same duties as the stock TIGER Jack ? used for show only. They use a spring that is stretched (under tension) to provide the pressure to keep the wipers against the windshield. The problem with this arrangement is that the spring is under almost no tension when the wiper is in contact with the glass. A much more modern design is to have the spring under compression (and thus at it's strongest) when wiper is against the windshield.

I found a wiper arm of this type that will fit the TIGER. They use a modern 13-inch wiper blade but unfortunately are finished in matte black rather than chrome as the originals are. The arms come from a Fiat 124 and must be cut down and bent to match the shape of the Tiger's arms. They do, however, clip right on to the TIGER splined wiper drive. I used a spot punch to dimple the new end to hold the wiper blades on.

I installed Fiat wiper arms on my TIGER and, after 89,000 miles and 35 years I am still most pleased with the results.

Interesting.  I'll have to look.  But of course, my cars haven't seen the
rain in about 35 years now.  And before I restored my Alpine back in 1988,
those springs had apparently been enough to cause the wipers to carve lines
in the glass!

Interestingly, back in the late 70s, early 80s, when I was first driving my
Alpine, a neighbor had a Fiat 124 Spyder.  I was always envious of how
easily his top could go up and down.  He would just unlatch and flick it
back.  So maybe those Italians did have good ideas for some things!  I was
not however envious of his dash, steering wheel angle or lack of
reliability.
