Perhaps a shield could be constructed that would offer some protection
from stones, etc (the biggest villain may be the rear wheels of the
tow vehicle).  I have seen many towed cars at show where the trailer
had such a shield.

I can't imagine anything touching the paint (esp new paint) being a good idea.
