I have one of those $79 Harbor Freight OBD/CAN readers.  I works well, 
let's me read codes and reset check engine lights.

Last year, I purchased an Android app called Torque (~$5) and a $19 
bluetooth OBD port adapter.  Torque does everything the HF unit does 
plus provides a lot more info and will store data real-time.  Of course 
you need an android phone or tablet - but a lot of folks have those 
these days.  I'm sure there's an Apple program that does the same thing 
that torque does.
