Well, there again, not all gear oils are equal.  The synthetic GL4 gear oil I use in all my Triumphs is actually thinner at 0C than
30 weight motor oil (roughly comparable to 10W40), and shifts much better at any temp.  But I've only driven maybe 50,000 miles
since switching, so it may blow up tomorrow.
