From johnbmacartney at gmx.com Sun May 1 08:05:28 2022 From: johnbmacartney at gmx.com (johnbmacartney at gmx.com) Date: Sun, 1 May 2022 15:05:28 +0100 Subject: [TR] A NEW book by John Macartney Message-ID: <009601d85d64$83c099e0$8b41cda0$@gmx.com> Listers, I don't know how large this list is in terms of names count but just before the Millenium, a very large number of you most kindly bought a book from me titled "In the Shadow of my Father - Life at Triumph". Originally, I thought a thousand copies would be enough but it later went through two re-prints of 1,500 and 1,000 copies to meet demand and I still have a few (less than 100) copies left. However, this post is not about that book. This last week, I thought I'd let you know I signed a contract with a London, England publisher for my latest book called "FROM IRON CROSS TO THE CROSS OF NAILS". It was originally my late father's story to tell but he was dogged by ill-health after retiring from Standard-Triumph in the 1960's and never got to write the narrative. After some forty years of research on my part and several complete re-writes, the story is finished. If you're interested in automotive history - especially if it's to do with Jaguar and Standard-Triumph - you may well be interested in my latest offering. It concerns the escape from Austria in the summer of 1939 of two people, both Jews, who were the official and only importers and distributors for Austria for cars made by The Standard Motor Company and SS Limited - which post-war became Jaguar Cars. The two people in question were Hans and Monika Koch and a very compressed version of their story appeared in "In the Shadow of my Father" but in "From Iron Cross" you get the full story in every detail and you'll get to *meet* Sir John Black (CEO Standard Motor Co) and Sir William Lyons (CEO Jaguar), read about some of their conversations and how they helped the Kochs in the early weeks of their unplanned and very coincidental arrival in England just before the outbreak of WW2. Speaking entirely for myself, the Koch's story has always fascinated me because what husband and wife both did - and on the spur of the moment without any prior planning of note - to avoid the horrors of places like Auschwitz, Bergen Belsen and Mauthausen to name but three places, defies comprehension. But somehow, they won through and against the most extraordinary odds. I didn't get the bones of this story just from Dad because in 1964 when my internship at Jaguar was coming to an end, I spent nine months in Vienna working for GHM KOCH AUTOMOBILE when it was still the Jaguar importer. That stay gave me a superb opportunity to check many facts of the story, read a lot of the documentation and study some important surviving artefacts to do with this man and his wife's escape from the jaws of the SS and Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler's mob of sadists. That's the basic background. The book is scheduled to appear in the Spring of 2023 but at the time of writing I have no idea of its pricing. I do know it will be available as a print on demand from Amazon in the UK, Barnes & Noble (I think), together with e-book versions and on Kindle. If you'd like more info when it becomes available, I'm working with the publisher to identify possible buyers. Just drop me an email to this address giving me your name, postal address and email contact details and I'll come back to you when more detail such as ISBN number and likely prices are available. Please feel free to circulate this email to your Jaguar and Triumph club friends and if you feel your club newsletter editor would like details for a forthcoming issue, I'd be pleased to hear from him or her. Finally, I think this story is somewhat apocryphal as I signed the publishing contract on the last day of Holocaust Memorial Week. A bit creepy, huh? No rubbing up front and some minor rubbing at the top inside rear fender wells on the custom roll bar that is welded to the frame. I added a 7/8? front sway bars and adjustable rear level arm shocks which I run stiffer than stock which eliminated the rubbing issues. With that suspension and those tires, it handles really well and very level. This photo was before the roll bar was installed, taken on the Motherlode Rally with my son behind the wheel, and shows the sway bar and the width of the tires. I have a stock steel wheel with a 165 tire and it fits in the spare tire compartment. I use this size in the Vredestein Sprint Classic tires, purchased though Summit Racing, no driving complaints but it would be a tight squeeze if you use it for your spare. My PO put a 145R15 Kumho in the spare box and it fits quite well, never had to put it on the ground but am sure it would be very serviceable in an emergency for a short period. If you are going to something larger, Andrew's creative solution should would be your best answer. Now, I'm not a mechanical engineer (electrical, though) but I think that it was a lot more than just leaving out the washer.? The clamping surface must be properly machined and often oversized nuts are used.? Just leaving out the washers on an assembly that was designed to use them can be problematic. As for pushing a washer around the lub bay with your nose, I suspect your supervisor was ex-military.? That sounds a lot like the tales told by army vets the world round.? The first time it happened, I applied blue Loctite to the bolt threads but the bolts backed out anyway. After the first issue I had the shocks rebuilt and the mounting holes on this second set of shocks seemed OK ( not worn out if round). Has anyone else run into this and if you have, how did you fix it? They kept it about 9 years before selling it. I was so happy to hear that. I'd often wondered what had become of the 3, a car I still miss to this day. He couldn't remember the name of the fellow who bought the 3 unfortunately. He had driven to the event in one of the antiques he owns, a beautiful whit 59 Pontiac convertible, which I had parked next to in the parking lot! Wheeee!!!!! Fan stopped working soon after the OEM reostat failed (replaced by simple toggle) which was soon after one of the heater hoses cracked at the core side. I'm assuming it's the fan that's shot but I'm willing to place a long shot bet on the ground wire before I tackle that job again. > > Thanks, > > Art > ** triumphs at autox.team.net ** > > Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html > Archive: http://www.team.net/pipermail/triumphs http://www.team.net/archive > > Unsubscribe/Manage: http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/triumphs/dave1massey at cs.com > ** triumphs at autox.team.net ** > > Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html > Archive: http://www.team.net/pipermail/triumphs http://www.team.net/archive > > Unsubscribe/Manage: http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/triumphs/forzion7 at gmail.com > ** triumphs at autox.team.net ** > > Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html > Archive: http://www.team.net/pipermail/triumphs http://www.team.net/archive > > Unsubscribe/Manage: http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/triumphs/trguy75 at gmail.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Turns out when I replaced the heater hoses last year I neglected to even re-attach the ground wire, it must have been lying against a convenient ground right up until last week. I have a TR4 temperature gauge in my TR3. The Moss gauge voltage stabilizer only lasted a few thousand miles and the quit outputting the 10 volts. Anybody else having short lifespans on their voltage stabilizers? Are there better ones out there? Moss makes a big deal about "Modern electronics in a vintage style housing". Screw the vintage style housing, I want dependability. Is there an aftermarket one that has a long life? ???? TIA, ???? Bill Brewer ????
