[TR] Unwelcome visitors

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons)
and wanted to provide a counter-perspective. While I have felt the same
initial reaction when Jehova’s Witnesses come to my house, I think we can
act with respect. These young people are generally between 18-21 years old
and gave up 2 years of their lives at their own expense (or that of their
family) to try to share the joy the feel in Jesus Christ and invite others
to feel that joy. They come from all over the world, there are actually
more members outside of the US than inside, but people from other countries
are often sent where their language skills are most needed. You may not
agree with them and they may not always act socially or emotionally
mature….because they are not mature. But I hope we can all agree that this
type of selfless service in young people is something the world could use
more of. Generally speaking they will be happy to come back another time if
you are busy, or if you genuinely can’t spare a few minutes or aren’t
curious just let them know that you would like them to leave. I don’t
believe heretical speeches, taking off clothes, etc. are warranted or
needed.

If you need help with something try asking for their help, you might be
surprised how willing they are to help you clean up your yard, or lift a
transmission into place.

Thanks,

Jeremiah Curry

I am not a Mormon, and I too have been on the receiving end of their visits.
But they are only kids and going on a mission is an integral part of their
beliefs; For many it is the first time away from home.

My suggestion is, if you do not want to hear what they have to say, simply
to tell them (or anyone else who approaches with a religious leaflet) “thank
you, but I’m not interested”.

Let’s not get into ridiculing people. We probably have several Mormons on
this list.

A friend of mine said he received some such visitors once. He invited them
in, started raving "I BELIEVE ! I BELIEVE !" and started to disrobe. They
left before he got too far. Or so the story goes. Dave ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍

Sorry to hear about your pest infestation. I live in Salt Lake City,
here in Utah which is the main source of such creatures, but alas, I
have no suggestions on how to rid yourself of them. I know they fear
alcohol, so perhaps insisting they share a pint or two of ale with you
might be sufficient deterrent.
