Ok friends…….a call to PENNDOT today after ½ hour wait…employee said that if you modify your lighting, such as LED, no longer legal for Antique tags as you modified it…..OK….if in accident, can insurance deny claim as not legal to States requirements ????

I appreciate everyone’s input….just trying to get clarification for good of the order !!

Rich,

More importantly is that your insurance company needs to know that.

As your insurance company to put it in writing that your car will be covered if you drive it after dark. If they won't do so, then it's time to start looking for another insurance company.

I looked at my policy and there is nothing regarding night driving. But I did notice that I'm not covered for the "Discharge of a nuclear weapon (even if accidental)". I'll have to be careful the next time I'm playing with a nuclear weapon.

OK Kiddies -

Being in the Risk Management Business, there is NO stipulation that limits driving during night hours on any of the following plates:

    1) Antique

    2) Historic

    3) Classic

The "official recommendation" is that you do not drive after dark on due to the lack of "lighting technology".

However, it is NOT illegal to drive after dark.

Bill. I agree on PENNDOT staff not knowing or adding their two cents

They scary part is our insurance companies use a “ loophole “ to avoid coverage

I’m going to try to get clarification from PENNDOT

Thx

Believe what you want, Rich.

Penndot is so random that you are likely to get any answer on any given day depending on who you talk to.

Back when photos were required, I had applications bounced because of:

-a person sitting in the car

-front window was down

-license plate visible and "was not original to the car"

I actually resubmitted the photos with the person in the car to see what would happen, and a week later I got my plate. Go figure.

If you can find in writing within the vehicle code that antique plates are not valid after dark, please let us know what section.

I did up a 1941 Ford in the mid 1980's. I had a good friend who was a State Trooper at the time who ran it up his chain of command. "If you want to drive legally after dark, make sure you have two taillights, turn signals, and sealed beam headlights". That was good enough for me.

Or just go with Classic and keep going in for inspections each year.

Thanks,

Bill

Even before any recent changes, there is no restriction to drive an antique registered car in PA after dark as long as you lighting meets current standards. This has been true for at least the last 25 years if not longer. Many people do not understand this and stick with Classic plates.

I looked into the after dark driving in PA in the past, and this statement "used" to be there....

Antique vehicles operated exclusively between sunrise and sunset are exempt from the normal lighting

requirements of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, but must have their original lighting equipment.

It looks that that statement has now even been removed from the code, as I am unable to find

it anyplace on PennDot documents...

Here is what I think is the current document that mentions nothing about driving after dark..

USE OF ANTIQUE, CLASSIC AND VINTAGE REGISTRATION PLATES The use of antique, classic and vintage registration plates is governed by Section 1340 of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, which states: “It is unlawful for any person to operate a motorcycle or vehicle with antique, classic or vintage registration plates for general daily transportation. Permitted use shall be limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses.” Occasional transportation and similar uses are defined as no more than one day a week. Although buses and trucks are eligible for antique, classic and vintage registration plates, buses MAY NOT be used to transport passengers and trucks MAY NOT haul cargo. Antique, classic and vintage registration plates are not available for motorized pedalcycles or motor homes.

If PA law says can’t drive after dark, does your insurance company still cover you if you do ?

Mine is American Modern and they say they go by each States restrictions / guidelines

I would not be covered when driving in dark hours in PA

Appreciate any feedback
