[Zmagnette] Engine Clatter & pressure drop

Well folks, I tried to turn the crankshaft pulley, but it would not wiggle. That was encouraging. Then I inserted the starting crank and turned it. Everything felt normal. That was encouraging. Then I pulled the pulley forward longitudinally, by inserting a screwdriver between the pulley and the timing cover. It easily moved about 1/8 inch forward. That was disturbing. So I guess I have a broken crankshaft, correct?

At least I have the Magnette running.

If you can the crank is almost certainly broken.  The "T" series cranks break whether the engine has been recently rebuilt or not and breakage appears independant of the engine overall condition.  The thought is that a harmonic vibration sets up in the crank at about 4100 rpm and finally fatigues the crank and it breaks.  With the stump pulling 5.125 rear ratio 4100 rpm is around 60mph.  Do yourself a favour and change the ratio to 4.3:1.
