Heres the latest on my window saga. I have disassembled the window
regulator. I have drilled the rivets that hold the window crank part
to the regulator. In there is a retainer spring. Each end of the
spring has hooks that engage the drive slot edges. When you crank
the window, the shaft and retainer spring turn inside the housing. I
could take pictures, but there are some excellent ones on Barney's
site here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/coupe/cp112.htm
On my regulator, both ends of the spring broke off. The spring was
remaining stationary, and the shaft was turning within. The little
broken spring ends were floating around in the mechanism. I think
they were jamming it and causing the symptoms. All the rest of the
parts look great.
I have cannibalized an MGA coupe window regulator. It has a good
spring. Rather than try to disengage the spring and move it to the
other shaft, I think I will just take the whole shaft with spring
attached from the MGA and put it into the Magnette regulator. Then
it is just a matter of reattaching the shaft with some pop rivets,
lubricating everything with some non-antique grease and putting it
back into the door. I'll let you know how it goes.
BTW, I thought it was interesting that the repair shown on Barney's
site involves using parts from a Magnette regulator to repair an MGA
coupe regulator. I am doing the exact opposite! Poetic justice?
