Do you have a electric meter??? Check for a closed circuit from the wire 
through the gauge to ground then you'll know or not. Put one end on the big 
wire at the solenoid and other end to the frame or motor or dash metal or 
firewall, then check for conductivity through your circuit.

Hi all

   Today, after completing my wiring. the first time with power. I smoked 
the large wire from the solenoid  to the fuse and to the amp gage.

The only thing I could think of was the amp gage was grounded someway. No 
other wires were effected. Any ideas???
