[Zmagnette] Kelvin Dodd AND "D" Panels

Some where back in the early ‘50s he caught my attention by describing a particular English Ford’s cornering prowess as “following the road like a cannon ball thru a stove pipe”. Shoot, by 1959 I was already into my 4th MG, a brand new,( I picked it up at the Houston docks), MGA in ash green, with sliding aluminium sliding side curtains, and a heater options.
I put over 130,XXX miles on that car in just 3 years, so pretty much lived in that car.
Tom McCahill, John Bond, tech editor then of Road and Track; and a guy who wrote a book called “Kings of the Road”, Ken Purdy, pretty much bent my mind around sporty cars, and MGs in particular.

I confess I'm feeling awful old at times these days, but not wise. And memory fails at times - it was not Gus's Garage but Gus's Model Garage. Further, I have to confess I was not wise enough to subscribe to Mechanix Illustrated. I frequently saw issues of it and when the opportunity presented itself, I did make a bee-line for Tom McCahill; master of the metaphor. In one of his sage reviews, I recall him describing the capacious trunk (boot) of some new car in terms of how many 1956 Philco refrigerator ice cubes it could carry. My love-affair with the Magnette began in 1959. In 1954, it would have meant little to me. Except maybe McCahill's review would have stirred my garagenous zones...

OK aged one, Do you have the Mechanics Illustrated road test by old Uncle Tom McCahill, of our beloved little Z Magnette????? Talk about old mags, that one I read regularly mostly for the McCahill articles on cars. The guy had an XK-120 Jag of his own and knew and hung out with those early race folks in the ‘50s.
By the way, It was a 1954 issue in which the ZA Magnette was tested and he loved the little car.

  Hallelujah…Thanks Allen.

I was starting to take this personally. Okay, what Allen said was right. I wasn’t logged in as a picasa user so every time I tried to see the pictures, it triggered an error message. I downloaded Picasa, registered and then put in link Steve sent out and EUREKA…pictures…whew!

  Thanks Allen…much appreciated as always,
  Storm

First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY KELVIN!! One of the neatest, most helpful guys in the club. Speaking of neat helpful guys, Steve Hanegan, of "wordless workshop" fame, father of "installing your window regulators" in zero words or less, has created another pictorial guide - to installing your own D-panel seals. And it was GREAT!

And speaking of HAPPY BIRTHDAY KELVIN, even though you're another year older Kelvin, do you remember "Wordless Workshop"? How about Gus's Garage"? Ads for King Midgets for $500. The ads with pictures of Ben Franklin asking: "What secret power did this man possess?" Such joys were packed between the covers of mid-50s issues of "Popular Science". Yahadtabethere folks, and I can't really be the only guy in the club who's old enough to recall these treasures.

Now Steve, regarding Storm's problem, would it help to put this up on the ZMG Facebook site? OTOH, can anybody here read the error code that Storm got? Also, I just noticed that when the picasaweb site comes up for me, it does so on a page that has my name on it and it gives me an option to log out. In other words, I'm a registered picasaweb user and I've just left myself logged in for so many years I've forgotten all about it.

In other words, do you have to be a registered, logged-in picasaweb user to get these rare tidbits from Steve Hanegan? I vaguely do remember that I had to register and log in to picasaweb to get some other Haneganisms. Storm is relatively new to the group, hence he might need to register/log-in to picasaweb to gain access to these. I'd offer to log out and see what happens but I have absolutely no idea what my userID or password is and I'd rather avoid the hassle, if possible.

Storm, you might try the modern picasaweb/google (yes, google now owns picasa). It involves downloading some software, which, to my knowledge, I don't have. All I can say is go to http://picasa.google.com/ and look around a little. Maybe you'll find an answer. Any have a better suggestion?

  Cheers,
  Allen

  Steve;

I guess it’s just me then. I tried retrieving it by clicking on it…no joy. Then I tried to cut and paste it into Internet Explorer…no joy. Thought maybe it was a Google thing so I then cut and pasted it into Google Chrome and got the same error message…
  500 INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR

Don’t know why that is or why I seem to be the only person who can’t see the pictures…weird. Glad I’m not taking this personally..

  Storm,

What error message did you get? I just tried it on three different computers in two different browsers and it came right up... try copying teh url and pasting it into a fresh window in your browser... If I could just post the pictures on the chat, I would try that, but, I don't think that we can share than many pictures and I don't think the captions would come through... Can any body help with this?

Happy "'Nother year older" day! Hope that it is a good day!

In response to some questions/comments regarding Lou's "D" panel seals, I dug out the panels from Andrea's car and the seals, and put this together... enjoy! (This one's for you Mike H!)
