Allen-
Problem with the C is likely lots of low end + heavy feet + bad shifting.
Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people never even used first.
I have no experience - C did not amount to much in my part of the world.
If 2nd is one of the gear sets with different tooth count, that may be
an issue - sometimes those reworks were not thought out real well -
Triumph had a lot of trouble as they changed tooth design (count and
helix angle) for obscure reasons, never clearly improving. You can use
tooth counts that do not really fit, by altering helix angle, sometimes
necessary in the application but not always real good.
4 synch MGB are so close to bulletproof in the application that they
rarely break anything = more box than torque, though some are finally
getting pretty loose. I only ever had one apart, a very early and
believed to be defective, as I recall. There certainly were NO parts for
the thing.
3 synch is just as you say. The layshaft/bearings fail, and the tooth
load is moved to the tip = SNAP, or if used gently the teeth get
horrible wear until there is not enough left to carry the load, then
snap. 3 synch only break 2nd and/or rarely third when the shaft is so
far gone that the gear is about 1/4" from where it should be. If the
shaft breaks, it takes out everything including the case sometimes.
The other 3 synch failure is bad crunching into R/1, which gnaws the
teeth away from the end until there is nothing left. The design is such
that the 1st gear part of the laygear essentially has only one tooth
contact, so it is weak. And I always thought that there may have been
some inadequacy in heat treatment, as it was fairly common that only one
or two teeth would show severe wear. All this usually takes until the
layshaft is worn out, so you then get the two fail modes together.
All comments re 3 synch apply to A series boxes too, though the later
ones got better.
It all has a lot to do with using a 1950 design for another 30 years as
power and weight went up a lot.
