Soft tops on Alpine GTs

Hello All,

My Alpine series IV is one of the GT models. While I like having the
upgraded interior and the hardtop, I really miss having a soft top.
A couple of months back "Classic & Sportscar" was evaluating a used
Alpine that had been listed in their classified section, and they
commented that it was a GT but had been retrofitted with a soft top
by the dealer "like most GTs" -- or something to that effect. (This
was in the UK.)

First of all, are there any GT owners on the list? If so, have any of
you added a soft top to your cars? How much work is it? Do you get
to keep the rear "seat" pad and panels, or do you have to strip all of
that out and start from scratch? Was this really a common operation
on GTs?

I'm really kicking myself for not keeping the top mechanism off of a
series IV that I scrapped years ago. At the time I didn't have any
room for the rusted hulk and had little room for parts. I stripped what
I could use and was forced to send the rest to the junkyard to be
crushed -- including the bits for the top...
