Has anyone had experience putting a non-original alternator in an
Alpine? I put in an internal regulator 70-amp alternator from a 1978
Nissan Z. It works great except for a glitch on starting. When I start
the car, the ammeter reads no output from the alternator. I have to blip
the gas over 2500 rpm and then the ammeter swings completely to the right
and stays pegged against the side of the guage until I give another blip
of the gas over 2500 rpm. After that, it runs perfectly. I thought it
was the voltage regulator, but I replaced the whole unit and had the same
problem. The alternator has three wires: (1) power out to the starter
solenoid and then the battery, (2) light to the "alternator light
simulator" (which was but is no longer working -- I do not believe it
effects the circuit to the ammeter), and (3) an energizing wire which I
have looped straight to the power out wire (I could put it to a keyed
wire but the result should still be the same). Anybody have any thoughts?
