I was just added to this Alpine group. I sent a message yesterday about
my alternator, but neglected to say something about my car. So, here I
am: I have a late 1967 Sunbeam Alpine. It was one of the last few
hundred cars. I bought it in the fall of 1978 for $100 with a blown head
gasket, but otherwise complete and straight. I kept it running through
high school and part of college. Then it sat in my folks' driveway
through law school and more. I then got married to a lovely woman who not
only let me keep both of my sports cars (the other car is German and fast,
but somehow just doesn't have that English four-banger feel), she insisted
that I restore the Sunbeam. I still do not know how I got so lucky.
Anyway, 3 years later, my car is finally running and running great. I
rebuilt the engine to Holbay H120 standards, using a Holbay high-flow
head, dual side-draft Webers, mechanical advance distributor, lightened
flywheel, Holbay sport cam, Bosch coil and electric fuel pump -- this has
really made the car what it was supposed to be, or should have been. I
also rebuilt the front end with the help of Dan Walters. The only thing I
have to do now is finish the final touches to the new interior (the car
has been repainted in the original deep Oxford blue with an equally deep
red and black interior) and install the rebuilt overdrive transmission I
got from England. I have all the parts for the overdrive, except for a
stock column switch, although I have a non-stock switch that works the
same. I just have been enjoying the car so much that I do not want to
take the time to pull the engine, etc. That's all for now. Be seeing you.
