Jeff,

The circuit you describe is typical of most alternator circuits. GM
and Ford use a resistor in parallel with the bulb. This sets the proper
resistance for the circuit. The details are in the TE/AE SUNBEAM SURVIVOR.
 Perhaps Nissan is using the relay coil for the same purpose. If you
would like I can look up the resistance for the GM unit.
