Electrical Problems

I was tuning my car on the weekend and lost all electrical to the
ignition system - it would turn over, but no spark . After checking all the
usual things and finding nothing, I was about to give in !! But, after
wiggling a few things , everything came back to life. I finished the tune-up
and went out for a spin, only to have it die almost immediately. It turns
out that the vacuum advance spring in the distributor had jumped of it's pin
and was shorting out the points!! Now , my question is - Has anybody
experienced this and is there supposed to be a retainer to hold the spring
on the pin. Do I need the vacuum advance anyway? The car seems to run fine
without it being hooked up.
