Yes, on those occassions when the starter intermitantly quit and I couldn't
find a grade to park on (or willing volunteers to push). If you have to do
it, get your hand out of the way as the engine kicks. The crank doesn't
always disengage from the pulley nut, resulting in a jolly good whack on the
back of the wrist.

The crank is also useful for priming a rebuilt engine before starting it up
the first time.
