Re: Wire Wheels and Color Schemes
Subject: Wire Wheels and Color Schemes
Hello, I recently bought a late Series II from the estate of a machinist who
spent a portion of his retirement years turning his Alpine into a '57 T-bird
look-alike (down to the continental kit). The odometer reads 68K, which,
judging from general body & suspension wear, appears to be reasonably accura
te.
It has turned 30 miles since 1988, when it was last inspected. It has been
painted twice (blue->red->black) and had a red/white interior with S.III+ se
ats
installed somewhere along the way.
Some brake and wheel work is needed to get it back on the road before I star
t
to reverse the body/interior modifications. A couple of areas I'd appreciat
e
some help in are the wire wheels and factory color schemes.
I'm considering sending the wheels to Vally Wire Wheels in California for
rebuilding. They estimate about $70 plus parts for a 13" rim. Has anybody
dealt with them before? Other recommendations? Also, does anybody know what
tire size will give the correct diameter for the speedometer? I'm guessing
it's something like a 155/80 for these narrow rims. :-(
The ID plate was removed during one of the paint jobs. I have a paper
facsimile, but it does not include the original color number. It is the
light blue/gray color used in the '62/'63 timeframe. Anybody know the numbe
r
or what the color was called? The dash is a major problem, it has so many
layers of paint and vinyl wood that I have no idea what it originally looked
like. Any hints on how to color match this to original? Same goes for
the interior/carpet schemes that were used with the original blue.
Thanks for any help on these. I'd also be glad to hear of any Sunbeam
activities in the Texas area.
Best Regards,

***** NOTES from Jay Laifman (JLAIFMAN (at) PNM) at 9/27/95 11:40a
There were two blues available for Series II Alpines:
#52, Lake Blue, a mid blue, and
#53, Wedgwood Blue, a light blue.
There was also #61, Quartz Blue Metallic, a pale silvery blue, but used
only on Series III.
I bought new wire wheels from Valley Wire Wheels (they are about 10 miles
from me), about 8 years ago and have been very happy. I do not know
about their wheel restoration abilities. FYI, to my knowledge, the
Sunbeam wires are the same as the AH Sprite and MG Miget, but not the
Spitfire. At least that is what the Moss Motor cataloge shows.
As to tires, I have been running Michelin XZX's, which I believe are a
slightly lower profile (I will check tonight). Depending on your use,
i.e., freeway vs. city, the rpm can get pretty high unless you keep the
tires bigger or have an overdrive. My Series V manual says that stock
tires are 6.00 x 13 "C41" or 5.90 x 13 "RS.5" (optional), and I haven't
the foggiest ideal what that means as compared to today's tire
measurements, which I also do not understand (Isn't it something like the
percentage of the sides to the entire cross cut of the tire?)
Didn't interiors come in three choices?: Black, black or black?
Good luck.
