***** NOTES from Jay Laifman (JLAIFMAN (at) PNM) at 10/31/95 8:26a
Thanks for the information. I have spent a few minutes over the last
week or so playing with my new cover - I say playing because I have not
had enough time to really attack it and have therefore tried a few
different things on spots to see which I will do when I ultimately get the
time. I have rubbed in Simichrome, which cleans and polishes it up in a
hurry, but does not seem to do much for stains. I have sanded it
thoroughly with wet dry 600, but have not got very far. From your
message, it looks like I should go farther down then back up. The cover
seems to have some imperfections, for instance, where the internal ribs
are, on the outside one can see a line across the top of the cover. Since
there seems to be some sort of variation in the metal here, I imagine no
amount of sanding will remove it. Maybe with enough buffing the glare
will make it less noticable. I also bought a DICO buffing pad for my
drill and Rouge. I bought the smaller diameter one and now think I might
need the bigger one for more speed. The instructions say to put the rouge
next to the spinning pad and wait for the friction heat to melt the rouge
on to the pad. Well, it took a while and then didn't seem to do much to
the cover. Maybe the rouge is wrong. Maybe I should have pushed harder
or waited longer for more rouge to attach to the pad. What was your
experience?
Thanks.
Jay
