The throwout bearing is likely worn out, and the external adjustments
will be temporary fixes. Increasing the length of the pushrod will
allow for greater angular motion of the throwout bearing arm, eventually
dragging the ring shaped throwout bearing all the way over to the
transmission input shaft. The bearing will wear a groove in the shaft.

I speak from first hand experience, albeit this phase of my project was
in 1978.
