Touching clutch

I was once told that one should never ever touch the surface of a clutch
plate or brake pads or shoes because the oils from the fingers could stay
on the surface which could ruin the surface once it was used. But, then I
have seen some people I thought knew what they were doing just grab at
such surfaces. With all this talk about problems with clutches, etc., is
there any validity to this?

Oh, I posted about Thoroughbreds & Classics having an article about
Tigers and Alpines in its December issue. I saw the magazine I was
looking at again and I was off by a month. It is the January issue,
which is to come out on December 6 (hey that's today), that has the
article.
